Gurugram April 2016 | Preface

Blessed Self,
Om Namah Sivaya

By the grace of Master and Swamiji, we had a very successful high season both in India and Bahamas. Europe continued to have their year-long busy season, with staff working very hard. New Centres opened in South America. Teacher Training Courses continue to blossom in new locations all around the World.

A notable mention should be to the strength of the Sivananda charitable works in India, in particular the monthly Ayurveda Medical Camp, near the Neyyar Dam Sivananda Ashram, Kerala, as well as the Sivananda Rural Mobile Clinic, near the Meenakshi Ashram Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The Ayurveda Camp continues to grow stronger, with citizens coming for consultations with the doctors and given the knowledge of Ayurveda to be able to cure themselves of long carrying ailments. People are now arriving from all over Kerala and not just near the Ashram. The Sivananda Rural Mobile Clinic, in Tamil Nadu, is slowly turning into the Sivananda Rural Medical Hospital, with the help of Dr. Narayana Sami, of Vikram Hospitals of Madurai. The last Mobile Clinic focused on the physically disabled. Our hearts and souls were moved to see those suffering, able to receive help in a very small, but profound way. Swamiji’s goal was vibrantly visible in these clinics. The Sivananda Organization’s diligence provides this much needed charitable work, medical camps and clinics to everyone.

Please remember it is your continued support towards the Sivananda Organization that enables us to do what we do, both imparting the ancient teachings of Yoga and Meditation, plus, providing the much needed charitable work  as these medical camps, medical and educational help, building and repairing houses.

Your donations and continued support are essential for us to continue this path in the name of Master and Swamiji. To donate, please send an email to [email protected] for information on how to go about it. Help us reach our goal of service around the World.

Meanwhile, Sivananda Centres and Ashrams, from around the world, joined to chat Om Tryambakam to honour Swami Rajeshwarananda-ji Mathaji’s life of service and for her soul to reach moksha as she left her physical body 06 March 2016, Trivandrum, India.

Pranams to all.

Let your life become a continuous Yajna, a sacrifice to God. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Raja Yoga

From Discourse IV: “Kaivalya Pada- On Realization”

IV.24. TAD ASAMKHYEYA-VASANABHIS CITRAM API PARARTHAM SAMHATYA-KARITVAT

‘The mind, though filled with innumerable tendencies and desires, acts for the Self, for they act in conjunction.’

Commentary:
The mind is directly associated with the Self, so it acts for the Self even while it is still full of worldly thoughts.

Always associate with the inner pure Consciousness. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Bhagavad Gita Quote

Chapter XVIII: The Yoga of Liberation by Renunciation

ARJUNA UVAACHA:

XVIII.1. SANNYAASASYA MAHAABAAHO TATTWAMICCHAAMI VEDITUM;
TYAAGASYA CHA HRISHEEKESHA PRITHAK KESHINISHOODANA.

Arjuna said(to Krishna):

I desire to know severally, O mighty-armed, the essence or truth of renunciation, O Hrishikesa, as also of abandonment, O slayer of Kesi!

SRI BHAGAVAAN UVAACHA:

XVIII.2. KAAMYAANAAM KARMANAAM NYAASAM SANNYAASAM KAVAYOVIDUH;
SARVAKARMAPHALATYAAGAM PRAAHUSTYAAGAM VICHAKSHANAAH.

The Blessed Lord(Krishna) said(to Arjuna):

The sages understand Sannyas to be the renunciation of action with desire; the wise declare the abandonment of the fruits of all actions as Tyaga.

XVIII.3. TYAAJYAM DOSHAVADITYEKE KARMA PRAAHURMANEESHINAH;
YAJNADAANATAPAH KARMA NA TYAAJYAMITI CHAAPARE.

(Krishna speaking to Arjuna)

Some philosophers declare that all actions should be abandoned as an evil, while others declare that acts of gift, sacrifice and austerity should not be relinquished.

During Sadhana the old evil forces will try to regain an entrance into the mind. Keep a vigilant watch. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Glossary

MOUNA – Silence. The Truth of Brahman, expressed by the Brahman/knower, by mere abidance in stillness.

Swami Sivananda advises, “The benefits of Mouna (Silence) are incalculable. Observe Mouna for two hours daily. Live alone for two hours in a room. Introspect. Meditate. Watch your thoughts carefully.

Mouna develops will power. It checks the impulse of speech. It is a great help in the observance of truth and the control of anger. Emotions are also controlled and irritability vanishes. A mouni (one who observes mouna) uses measured words and his speech is very impressive. A mouni first thinks whether his speech will wound the feelings of others, what sort of impression it will make on the minds of others, and so on. He is careful in his speech. He is thoughtful and considerate. He weighs each word before it comes out of his mouth. He can stay for a long time in seclusion.

During mouna, introspect. Watch the thoughts. Then you will come to understand the ways of the mind and its workings. You can notice how the mind runs from one object to another in a moment’s time. You will derive immense benefit from the practice of mouna. Real mouna is silence of the mind. Physical mouna eventually leads to silence of the mind.

Mouna of the mind is far superior to the mouna of speech. Mouna should come by itself. It must be natural. Forced mouna is only wrestling with the mind. It is an effort. If you live in truth, then mouna will come by itself, and there will be absolute peace. Practice. Observe Mouna for two hours daily. Live alone for two hours in a room. Introspect. Meditate. Watch your thoughts carefully. Feel the joy and peace of silence for yourself.”
