Gurugram June 2016 | Preface

Blessed Self,
Om Namah Sivaya

Greetings to all. The Sivananda Headquarters in Val Morin Canada was happy to host the most recent Executive Board Members meeting, where a lot of positive aspects were discussed. More new courses and manuals are in the works, so look forward for that news in the coming new year or so.

The high season for the Yoga Camp is about to begin. Yoga Camp staff are preparing for these busy summer months accepting a good number of new staff to the roster. There are also a keen increase of students and kids enrolling into the special events such as Kids Camp. The Subramanya and Mariamman Temples are already opened, immediately seeing a constant stream of devotees visiting.

Around the globe, most Centres and Ashrams report a high anticipation, while they prepare for their participation during Yoga Day Celebrations on June 21st 2016.

All the Sivananda staff are working hard in their Sadhana, to stay tuned with Swamiji’s energy. Thank you for your continued support of the Sivananda Organization.

Pranams to all.

Meditation and contentment are the secrets of good health and longevity. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Raja Yoga

From Discourse II – Sadhana Pada – On Spiritual Disciplines

II.32. SAUCA-SAMTOSA-TAP-SAVDHYAYESVARA-PRANIDHANANI

“The Niyamas consists of cleanliness, contentment, austerity, self study, and self surrender.

Commentary:
The ‘niyamas’ are observances which cultivate positive qualities. They involve purification, stilling the mind, self-discipline, inquiry into the nature of the Self, and surrendering the personal will, or ego, to the Supreme will. Aside from cleanliness, one should cultivate indifference toward the body. Cleanliness means internal as well as external purification. A proper diet based on vegetarianism and natural foods, specialized yogic cleansing techniques, and the Yoga exercises keep the body internally pure and free from obstructions. Cleanliness also extends to the mind. Only when it is it is purified of all dross can it be a pure mirror for the reflection of the Self.

Be humble, unassuming and charitably disposed towards all. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Bhagavad Gita Quote

Chapter II: Sankhya Yoga

(Krishna speaking to Arjuna)
II.13. Just as in this body the embodied (soul) passes into childhood, youth and old age, so also does it pass into another body; the firm man does not grieve thereat.

COMMENTARY: Just as there is no interruption in the passing of childhood into youth and youth into old age in this body, so also there is no interruption by death in the continuity of the ego. The Self is not dead at the termination of the stage, viz., childhood. It is certainly not born again at the beginning of the second stage, viz., youth. Just as the Self passes unchanged from childhood to youth and from youth to old age, so also the Self passes unchanged from one body into another. Therefore, the wise man is not at all distressed about it.

Sit for meditation. Close your eyes. Close your mind to every impression from the five senses. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Glossary

TAPAS – Tapasya –

Austerity, practical (i.e., result-producing) spiritual discipline; spiritual force.

Literally it means the generation of heat or energy, but is always used in a symbolic manner, referring to spiritual practice and its effect,  i.e. the roasting of karmic seeds; the burning up of karma.

Walk in the foot-steps of the great Saviours and Saints of the world. – Sri Swami Sivananda
