Gurugram June 2019 | Preface

Blessed Self,

Om Namah Sivaya

Greetings from the Yoga Camp Sivananda Headquarters in Val Morin, Canada.

On the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Titriya, two Shasta Abda Purti celebrations were conducted at the Yoga Farm for Swami Jnaneshwarianandaji and Swami Narayananandaji (from Vietnam). Swami Vasishtananda performed the extensive, traditionnal Shasta Abda Purti Homas and Pujas, lasting for 5 hours, including a Brahmacharya initiation for Mahalakshmi Chaitanya (formerly Karuna Devi). The ceremony was beautiful. We pray for health, wisdom and success in Self realization for the two Swamis and the new Brahmachari.

Om Trayambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam Urvarukamiva Bandhanam Mrityor Mukshiya Mamritat

With the mission of reaching out, Swami Gokulananda, from the Berlin Centre, led a Russian yoga retreat tour in two locations, teaching at two retreats, first in St. Petersburg and the following week in the vicinity of Krasnojarsk, Siberia. Also teaching were three Sivananda teachers – Durga Devi from the Vilnius Centre, Shankari from the Moscow Centre and Jnaneshvara from Berlin. They reported how the yoga students in Russia were very much inspired by the sincerity in yoga and were seeking spirituality.

Other news, the main Sivananda Organization website – www.sivananda.org – has now a new beautiful design, with elegant looking newsletters and quotes; schedules and the ability to apply for Teacher Training Courses online.

We thank you all for your continued support and encouragement of the Organization and its staff.

May Master and Swamiji’s grace guide us in all ways. Pranams to all.

Live to serve humanity. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Crave for a thing, you will get it. Renounce the craving, the object will follow you by itself. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Raja Yoga

Discourse II: “Sadhana Pada – On Spiritual Disciplines”

II.42. SAMTOSAD ANUTTAMAH SUKHA-LABHAH
‘From contentment comes supreme happiness.’

Commentary: Man is ever searching for happiness in external objects, but it can only be attained when the mind is satisfied with what has been allotted and is no longer looking. When the mind is stilled and contented, happiness is automatic.

Make Yoga a spiritual reality in your daily life. Become a practical Yogi. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Bhagavad Gita Quote

Chapter II: Sankhya Yoga

INDRIYANAM HI CARATAM YAN MANO NUVIDHIYATE TAD ASYA HARAIT PRAJNAM VAYUR NAVAM IVAMBHASI

(Krishna speaking to Arjuna)
II.67. For the mind, which follows in the wake of the wandering senses, carries away his discrimination, as the wind (carries away) a boat on the waters.

COMMENTARY: The mind which constantly dwells on the sensual objects and moves in company with the senses destroys altogether the discrimination of the man. Just as the wind carries away a boat from its course, so also the mind carries away the aspirant from his spiritual path and turns him toward the objects of the senses.

Life here leads us through many conflicts and trials. Life is a series of conquests of the internal foes. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Glossary

SHASHTI ABDA PURTHI – Sanskrit: Shashti – 60, Abda – years, Purthi – completion

Shashti Abda Purthi is also known as ‘Shashti Purthi’. It is a Hindu ceremony that is celebrated to commemorate a person’s 60th birthday. The age sixty is of great significance because it is considered as a turning point in one’s life. At this age one has usually fulfilled their commitments to family, home and service and now can turn their mind to spirituality. There are many meaningful, elaborate rituals and ceremony to mark this 60 year milestone.

Forget the past. Begin life afresh. Face life boldly. A glorious future is awaiting you. – Sri Swami Sivananda
