Gurugram November 2016 | Preface

Blessed Self,
Om Namah Sivaya

November greetings to all during this month of remembrances of the life of Swami Vishnudevananda.

We are happy to share how the Sivananda Organization continues to successfully reach out the World through the Master and Swamiji’s teachings of inner peace. Ashrams are busy extending their season as long as possible in order to offer as many TTCs and ATTCs in their schedules. Swamis of the Organization are traveling, teaching and inspiring other Centres and Ashrams on opposite sides of the globe. The Centres are creating an ever expanding list of innovative new programs on health, asanas, meditation and spiritual support.

As well as utilizing the Ashrams as locations for long term courses, the Sivananda Organization has been innovative and resourceful in finding resorts around the world to offer TTC and ATTC courses – San Raphael, Antioquia, Columbia; Mittersill, Hohe Tauren, Austria; Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina; Dalat Mountains, Vietnam; Phu Chaisai, Chiang Ria, Thailand; Rudraprayag, Himalaya Mountains, India; Aluenda, Zaragoza, España Spain; Ustka, Baltic Sea, Poland; Chengdu, Sichuan, China to name a few.

Staff members report they are honoured to be able to offer a place for students seeking the knowledge of Master and Swamiji. May Master and Swamiji guide us in our Sadhana and service. Pranams to all.

Renunciation is the bestower of peace and immortality. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Raja Yoga

Chapter II: “Sadhana Pada – On Spiritual Disciplines”

II.15. PARINAMA-TAPA-SASKARA-DUHKHAIR GUNA-VRITI-VIRODHAC CA DUHKHAM EVA SARVAM VIVEKINAH.

‘To those who are discriminating, every action brings pain due to the anticipation of loss, new desires, or conflicts arising out of the interaction between the mind and the three qualities of nature’.

Commentary:
The wise man utilizes that no happiness is to be found in the material world, for pain eventually arises from all actions. Where there is lack of discrimination, happiness is accompanied by the fear of its loss; and since change is a law of nature, loss is inevitable. When not concerned with loss, the mind is often conjuring up new ideas, and there is no happiness until those are satisfied, which is, again, immediately followed by fear of loss. The uncentered mind is never at rest for it is ever caught in the play of the qualities of nature-purity, activity and lethargy. Peace can only be found beyond the phenomenal world.

The Upanishads, are not the products of the individual mind and the intellect. They are revelations. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Bhagavad Gita Quote

Chapter VII: The Yoga of the Division of Wisdom

VII.26. VEDAAHAM SAMATEETAANI VARTAMAANAANI CHAARJUNA;
BHAVISHYAANI CHA BHOOTANI MAAM TU VEDA NA KASHCHANA.

(Krishna speaking to Arjuna)

I know, O Arjuna, the beings of the past, the present and the future, but no one knows Me.

VII.27. ICCHAADWESHASAMUTTHENA DWANDWAMOHENA BHAARATA;
SARVABHOOTAANI SAMMOHAM SARGE YAANTI PARANTAPA.

By the delusion of the pairs of opposites arising from desire and aversion, O Bharata, all beings are subject to delusion at birth, O Parantapa!

Unite! because the One Self is the great Unity in which all beings exist. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Glossary

PURUSHARTHA – human aspiration; individual exertion; self effort

Commentary from Swami Sivananda –

If every individual behaves according to his own nature only, if there is none who has no nature of his own, then there is no scope for individual exertion (Purushartha). In that case the teachings of the Shastras, which inspire people to right exertion, would be quite purposeless.

Of the four grand objects of human aspiration—Purusharthas—viz., Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha, Dharma is given the foremost rank in the scriptures. Dharma alone is the gateway to Moksha, to immortality, infinite bliss, supreme peace and highest knowledge. Dharma alone is the primary Purushartha. Dharma is the first and foremost Purushartha. Through the practice of Dharma alone can you ever hope to achieve the crowning glory of all human endeavours, viz., Moksha which is the best and the highest of all desirable things.

What you are now at present is the result of what you thought and did in the past. What you shall be in the future will be the result of what you think and do now. You find an environment which is best suited to the tendencies you acquired in a former life. You can create better conditions for the future. You can make your Karma what you choose. You can rise to a very high state of perfection. You can change your character, thoughts and actions. Bhishma and Vasishtha laced Purushartha, or exertion, above their destiny.

In the Gita you will find: “Even the man of knowledge acts in conformity with his own nature; beings follow nature; what shall restraint avail.” BG Chaitanya III-33

Develop fiery determination, iron will, burning dispassion and yearning for liberation.  You will realize the Truth. – Sri Swami Sivananda
