Gurugram July 2016 | Preface
Blessed Self,
Om Namah Sivaya
Greetings to all. The International Day of Yoga celebrations on the 21st of June was very successful throughout the entire Sivananda Organization. Sivananda Centres and Ashrams worldwide did their very best to create full day programs and events to participate in this significant day, in collaboration with each country’s Indian High Commission, Embassy or Consulate. The Sivananda Swamis, staff, karma yogis and students all participated and, in some cases, led portions of the public events in city parks, churches and corporate buildings. A creative range of events in nearby neighborhoods and in the Sivananda Centres and Ashrams brought many citizens together under the umbrella of Yoga. Asana classes, demonstrations, Satsangs, workshops, fliers and vegetarian snacks or dinner were offered. Friends were made.
Individual reports of the International Day of Yoga can be found in the International News Section, at the bottom of this GURUGRAM, under individual Ashrams and Centres.
We are pleased to announce the expansion of the popular Sivananda Kids Camp, thanks to the Directors of Centres and Ashrams around the world. The opportunity for children to receive the benefit of Yoga is quickly reaching more locations than ever before. Kids Camp is now offered at several Sivananda Centres, plus in the Summer Programs of many Ashrams. The Yoga Farm Ashram celebrated its 25th year of Kids Camp, while the program is relatively new at both Delhi Centres and Madurai Ashram. The Sivananda staff report they are working hard in their Sadhana, staying tuned with Swamiji’s energy. Their energy is high. Thank you for your continued support of the Sivananda Organization.
May Master and Swamiji bless us always in our Sadhana and service. Pranams to all.
Adapt yourself to your surroundings and environments. You will enjoy peace and strength. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Raja Yoga
From Discourse I: “”Samadhi Pada- On Contemplations” “
I.1. ATHA YOGAANUSHAASNAM
“Now Yoga is explained.” The word ‘Yoga’ means Union. It refers to the process of uniting the individual with the Universal Soul. It brings about that state of mind which is unruffled and calm in all situations.
Get up now. This is Brahmamuhurta (Auspicious Early Morning Time). Everywhere is Silence. Nature herself is at Peace. Now, retire peacefully into the inner chambers of your heart. – Sri Swami Sivananda
Bhagavad Gita Quote
Chapter II: Sankhya Yoga
(Krishna speaking to Arjuna)
II.49. Far lower than the Yoga of wisdom is action, O Dhananjaya (Conqueror of wealth, Arjuna). Seek thou refuge in wisdom; wretched are they whose motive is the fruit.
COMMENTARY: Action done with evenness of mind is Yoga of wisdom. The Yogi who is established in the Yoga of Wisdom is not affected by success or failure. He does not seek fruits of his actions. He has poised reason. His reason is rooted in the Self. Action
performed by one who expects fruits for his actions, is far inferior to the Yoga of wisdom wherein the seeker does not seek fruits; because the former leads to bondage and is the cause of birth and death.
Faith and practice can enable you to overcome and and every obstacles in the spiritual path. – Sri Swami Sivananda

KRISHNA JAYANTI / KRISHNA JANMASHTAMI – (see Calendar)
This is the birthday of Lord Krishna, the Eighth Divine Incarnation.
It falls on the 8th day of the dark half of the month of Bhadrapada (August-September). This is one of the greatest of all Hindu festivals. Lord Krishna was born at midnight. A twenty-four hour fast is observed on this day, which is broken at midnight.
The Lord appeared when the moon entered the house of Vrishabha at the constellation of the star Rohini, on Wednesday, the 8th day of the second fortnight of the month of Sravana, which corresponds to the month of Bhadrapada Krishnapaksha, according to the Barhaspatyamana, in the year of Visvavasu, 5,172 years ago (from 1945), which means 3227 B.C.
According to traditional sources, the Janmashtami is observed on the day when the ashtami tithi occurs at midnight. If the ashtami tithi AND the Rohini nakshatra occur on the same day, then the observance is considered to be doubly sacred; otherwise the observance is held on the day on which the ashtami prevails at midnight. The vrata mainly consists of fasting, spending the whole night in the worship of Krishna, reciting hymns of praise and Krishna’s pastimes, reciting prayers from the Bhagavata, offering arghya to Krishna, and the parana or the ceremonial breaking of the fast. The next day is celebrated as Krishna Jayanti.
Though everything happens according to the Supreme Will, the Karma of the individual determines the form or shape of the experience that is to be had. – Sri Swami Sivananda
