Gurugram August 2016 | Preface

Blessed Self,
Om Namah Sivaya

Greetings to all.
Reflecting the energy of the entire Sivananda Organization, the Sivananda Yoga Camp/Headquarters is surrounded by high energy this month, concluding the Kavaadi Festival celebrations, a full TTC course and starting a new Teen Karma Yoga program, plus the ever popular annual Family Week. These programs, and more, are all part of the Sivananda Organization’s worldwide effort to provide an ever-expanding list of supportive and educational programs around the topic of Yoga. Sivananda Centres and Ashrams continue to spread timely messages and teachings of Master Swami Sivananda and Swami Vishnudevananda to new faces every day. Much gratitude for your continued support towards Master and Swamiji’s missions. May their blessings be with us always.

Raja Yoga

From Discourse II: “Sadhana Pada- On Spiritual Disciplines”

‘From that comes the highest mastery over the senses’.

The senses are man’s connection to the physical plane. When it is decided that is time to transcend the distractions of the world, the most difficult undertaking is mastery of the senses. Though perfection of ‘pratyahara’ the greatest obstacles to Enlightment are overcome.

Get up now. This is Brahmamuhurta (Auspicious Early Morning Time). Everywhere is Silence. Nature herself is at Peace. Now, retire peacefully into the inner chambers of your heart. – Sri Swami Sivananda

Bhagavad Gita Quote

Chapter II: Sankhya Yoga

(Krishna speaking to Arjuna)

II.67. The mind, which follows in the wake of the wandering senses, carries away his discrimination, as the wind (carries away) a boat on the waters.

COMMENTARY: The mind which constantly dwells on the sensual objects and moves in company with the senses destroys altogether the discrimination of the man. Just as the wind carries away a boat from its course, so also the mind carries away the aspirant from his spiritual path and turns him toward the objects of the senses.

Good character is like catching a contagious disease. Acquire it by Satsanga/the company of good people. This is the best way. – Sri Swami Sivananda

The withdrawal of senses from objectivity; the fifth rung in the Raja Yoga ladder.

In the practice of Pratyahara, the consciousness of the person is internalized so not experience the sense of taste, touch, sight, hearing and smell, taking the practitioner to the next stages of yoga – Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (mystical absorption), which is the aim of all yogic practices.

Pratyahara makes the mind calm.

Pratyahara is the most important limb in Yoga Sadhana. – Swami Sivananda

The enjoyments of the senses are transient and the senses themselves are worn out by too much enjoyment. – Sri Swami Sivananda
