Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Zentrum, Berlin, Germany

Om Namah Sivaya. There is a TEMPORARY CLOSING OF THE BERLIN YOGA Centre from 2.11.2020
There will be no classes in the Berlin Yoga Centre until further notice. The yoga shop is open and we are still there for you by phone and email. Call us if you have any questions: 030 85 99 97 98 Let yourself be inspired by what online yoga has to offer. We wish everyone health and inner strength.

Meanwhile the November online courses and classes ran well. We continued teaching some of the online classes, shared with Reith. Students were grateful and many of them participated very regularly in the same class, reflecting their same routine as if the Centre was open. For the TTC Online the Berlin staff were part of the team with mentoring and translation. Around the house we prepared the garden for the winter and continued the painting project. The women’s changing room project started. A few close teachers were still able to come for Karma Yoga, supporting the Centre by cleaning, polishing altar brass and ironing. Best wishes for health and peace. OM.

Nirmala Chaitanya went back to Madurai for TTC, on the same day, staff member Shanthi returned to the Chennai Centre from her vacation. Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Montevideo, Uruguay

Om Namah Sivaya from the Montevideo Centre. The Montevideo Centre is open.

We started November with a special activity remembering Swamiji Vishnudevananda’s Mahasamadhi. Everything was prepared to do it online. The altar looked very beautiful, with many flowers and incense. Teachers and students from different countries participated. The ceremony was simple but at the same time carried out with a lot of love and respect. The week was sunny although the spring breeze was present every day. Classes at the Centre continued their normal course, despite the current situation in Uruguay. Infections from the pandemic increased and there was a general state of caution. We maintained strict sanitary protocol. We celebrated Diwali online. The Centre was illuminated as the Om Namo Narayanaya mantra was repeated. The ceremony was broadcasted from the meditation room which was very well attended and appreciated. The participants from their homes also lit their own candles, offered flowers while repeating the mantras. A very loving atmosphere was created during the event. Kanti Devi and Chandrashekar prepared everything with great care and affection. Dr. Padma also participated in the ceremony. The TTC online continued.

By mid November the weather was good, hot and sunny. The students followed their practice with great devotion, despite the fact that most of them have given up due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in our country. Dr. Padma continued with the Chair Yoga workshop. South American online Satsangs were very successful. We prayed intensely for peace and harmony in this world. May the Grace of Gurudev and Swamiji be upon us all. Om Shanti. Om.

Centre de Yoga Sivananda Vedanta, Paris, France

Om Namah Sivaya. The Paris Centre continues to give its courses online. Face-to-face classes are suspended until further notice following recent decrees related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During November the Paris Centre remained closed. God gave us an uplifting week with the beautiful celebration of Divali online by the Sivananda family in Europe and the Pujas led by the priest from Bangalore. The Paris’ students were very grateful to the Sivananda family for the precious daily programs online. The students were present for the Satsangs, the Pujas, the mantra chanting, the courses, the workshops, the lectures, the special programs and the asana classes. Many of the students went online with Orleans, entrusting to God their relatives chanting the Maha Mrtyunjaya Mantra for their protection. Over 140 Paris’ students were there for the Fire of Yoga. Daya and Vyasa took care of the plants and they continued to put a dose of sattva in the house. Vyasa continues to support the Centre with the links and the changes in the mindbody platform. The Centre was happy to welcome Sivakami who stayed few days in the Centre before going to India to see her family. Her father passed away the day of her departure. Swami Kailasananda guided and helped her to be at peace. The teachers and close karma yogis appreciated the personal greetings and invitations for a weekend’s program. During this gentle November Fall, surrounded by multi coloured leaves, we are united by the Sadhana.

The Paris’ students continue to participate actively in all the classes, Satsangs, mantra chanting, courses, special programs and activities proposed by the Sivananda Organization. Practicing online keeps the Paris’ family together. Everyone feels very grateful. May the Divine Mother destroy all negativity and bring love and peace. May Swami Sivananda and Swami Vishnudevananda continue to guide and to inspire all of us. With all our wishes for health and peace. OM.

At the Centre in November we started with the celebration of the MahaSamadhi Of Swami Vishnudevananda. The Puja took place in the Mata Ashram with a group of close devotees. The Jala Samadhi was celebrated at the Centre with teachers and friends. After the Puja we watched together a movie on the life of Swamiji and a video of one of the Acharyas talking about the peace missions. The energy was very special and powerful. We felt grateful and blessed to have received the teachings of yoga from Swamiji and to be able to serve his mission. A new Pranayama course started and Raja Yoga, Meditation, and Ayurveda courses ended.

Mid November saw the Mata Ashram celebrate its 6th year anniversary, located in the beautiful Jerusalem mountains and managed by the dedicated, long term teachers, Govinda and Durga. Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Om Namah Sivaya. Toronto has gone into full lockdown for one month. We started an online meditation course and new gentle yoga course. We continued to stay in touch with teachers and work hard to offer courses and classes online. Dr Sundar offered Pranayama workshop, connecting to his extensive research. The workshop was very well received. Staff spent a weekend at the local farm owned by one of the teachers as the weather was very warm and it was beautiful to do Sadhana outside.

In November, due to new Ontario provincial government health measures the Centre had to close again. It is a temporary measure that the Canadian government introduced in order to regulate the increase numbers of COVID cases. We continued to teach online, maintaining contact with our students and teachers.

Meanwhile the staff at the Centre prepared the gardens for the winter with our teacher Jaya who has been helping throughout the closure. We did a lot of administrative work and prepared several workshops and courses. Several teachers are now teaching regularly. We had nice Diwali Satsang. Toronto still requires the Centre to be closed as COVID cases were on the rise in November. May Master and Swamiji’s blessings bring all good health and peace and that we continue to be useful for many. We send Om Namo Narayanaya to everyone. Pranams. Love to all. Om.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Vilnuis, Lithuania

Om Namah Sivaya. In November, courses classes and Satsangs continued successfully. We continued teaching open classes once a day online. Yoga 1 online started with 4 students. The first class was not easy to teach, because students were not ready to learn online – they had no experience how to use their devices in a way that teacher could see them properly. It is a big responsibility and more prana and care was needed. The other Yoga 1 started with a couple, who comes to the Centre for the private class – it is allowed officially. Our students and teachers were very grateful for the wonderful uplifting weekend programs with  Dr. M. Rossner, Ayurveda teachers, Pujas with the priest and especially for the inspiring Hatha Yoga classes and workshops with Swami Sivadasananda. Some close teachers come in the morning for meditation, Satsang and Sadhana together. Health and Peace to all. OM.

NISHKAMA KARMA YOGA

desire-less action, selfless action. nish: without; kama: desire.

More generally, it means action performed without desiring or fearing the consequences; action performed with indifference to the outcome. It is used to describe the practice of doing actions without any expectation of the fruits (results or reactions or effects).

In the practice of Nishkamya Karma Yoga, there is no loss of effort. There is no harm.” – Swami Sivananda

Nishkama Karma Yoga is another name for Karma Yoga, which is one of the main themes of the Bhagavad Gita. The practice of Nishkamya Karma Yoga destroys sins and impurities of the mind and causes Chitta Suddhi or purity of the Antahkarana. Knowledge of the Self dawns in a pure mind. Knowledge of the Self is the only direct means to freedom.

In the mind there are three Doshas, viz., Mala (impurities like lust, wrath, greed, etc.), Vikshepa (tossing of the mind), and Avarana (veil of ignorance). Mala is removed through Nishkamya Karma Yoga; Vikshepa by means of Upasana (worship); and Avarana by means of study of Vedantic literature and Jnana. Nishkamya Karma Yoga purifies the heart and prepares the mind for the dawn of knowledge (Jnana Udaya).
The following passage records how Sri Ramana Maharshi once demonstrated Nishkama Karma Yoga:
Mr. Rangachari, a Telugu pandit in Voorhees’ College of Vellore, asked about Nishkama Karma. There was no reply. After a time Sri Bhagavan [Ramana] went up the hill and a few followed him, including the pandit. There was a thorny stick lying on the way which Sri Bhagavan picked up; he sat down and began leisurely to work at it [sic]. The thorns were cut off, the knots were made smooth, the whole stick was polished with a rough leaf. The whole operation took about six hours. Everyone was wondering at the fine appearance of the stick made of a spiky material. A shepherd boy put in his appearance on the way as the group moved off. He had lost his stick and was at a loss. Sri Bhagavan immediately gave the new one in his hand to the boy and passed on.

Love all equally. – Sri Swami Sivananda
