Online classes also continued with students reporting their happiness that we remain offering online classes. We continued Satsangs at the Centre on Sunday evenings with the first Satsang for the first time again upstairs in the meditation hall. Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Om Namah Sivaya. In June the Hochiminh Centre went through a lot of changes because of the Covid-19 ‘s reoccurrence in Vietnam.

As June continued the Hochiminh Centre remained closed. Because the Covid situation in Ho Chi Minh City was getting more serious, there was social distancing and lock down for the whole city, so people had more time to take care of their health. With the grace of Gurus, our online courses blossomed with a lot of participants. Besides continuing all the well attended courses which were started from before, we started teaching a new online Kiryas and Pranayama course, taught by Mahashakti. A highlight was the starting of a new online course “Vedanta for Beginners”, taught by Swami Sitaramananda, with 92 people attending in total. The course was taught in English and translated to Vietnamese, Japanese with people who came from Vietnam, China, Japan and the USA. They were all inspired to learn and practice Vedanta in daily life. Last but not least, we continued to have regular meetings to report news and planning schedules together with other Centres and the Ashram in Vietnam. We were all blessed and happy to be a part of a big Sivananda Yoga family.

The Hochiminh Centre wrapped up all the online courses which started in June and prepared for our new online courses in July. We finished the online courses such as Anatomy and Physiology for yoga teachers, Adjustment and correction yoga poses and Pranayama and Kriyas, Advanced Asana. We also started the new Ayurveda for Beginner online course taught by Shambhu with 27 students in attendance. To celebrate the International Yoga Day we did a big program in cooperation with Dalat Ashram and other Centres in Vietnam to gather more than 300 people doing 108 rounds of Sun Salutation online together.
Other courses and Satsangs are still going well with a lot of participants. Staff was doing Mantra Chanting, Sadhana, and Satsang daily with lots of inspiration. We were happy to share the yogic wisdom to help more and more people find their peace in this crisis time. We pray for everyone’s health and inspiration to keep practicing and teaching! May the Sivananda family worldwide be safe and continue the wonderful teachings, in all ways possible. Om.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Om Namo Narayanaya. Blessed Sivananda Yoga Community, the Sivananda Yoga Centre in Los Angeles is closed until California businesses are cleared to reopen. This challenging time is our opportunity to turn inward, deepen our practice and keep our community strong and healthy. Through Satsang and our collective positive thoughts, we support each other and the world. Visit our website for our online offerings: daily yoga classes, workshops and courses, plus Satsangs with Acharya Swami Sitaramananda. Boost your immune system by practicing all paths of Yoga; feel healthier and stronger in both body and mind. Meanwhile, we are combing through the reopening regulations for LA County “fitness Centres”, as we begin envisioning reopening  the LA Centre in the coming month or so.

In June the LA Centre remained closed due to Covid-19 cases, hence the LA Centre staff continued to live and teach from the Yoga Farm Ashram. TTC continues smoothly. We participated in two Homas celebrated by Swami Vasishtananda – one for protection from ill effects of the solar eclipse and the other for Radha’s Shastipurthi. Blessings abounded. Courses were: a Concentration Course, Beginning Sanskrit and Meditation 1 course. One weekend we offered a talk – Demystifying Meditation – and a Hip Opening Workshop. A private student started another package of eight classes. Plans for reopening the LA Centre were well under way. We have been grateful for the unexpected seven months at the Yoga Farm.

By mid June, we continued to support the Yoga Farm online TTC—teaching, demonstrating, observing group teaching and mentoring. Swami Sivasankariananda attended a few sessions of the annual SYTAR conference (Yoga Therapy)—notably Swami Sitaramananda’s Vedantic meditation to open the conference, the global panel on the state of Yoga Therapy around the world (which also included Swami Sitaramananda), a session on PolyVagal Theory with Stephen Porges and a very comprehensive presentation on reaching out to the underserved. The two staff drove back to Los Angeles after seven months sheltering in the warm embrace of the Yoga Farm. May the Gurus guide us as our reach grows wider and wider. Om.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Montevideo, Uruguay

Om Namah Sivaya from the Montevideo Centre. During the month of June the Montevideo Centre’s activities continued to be very positive, both in person and online. We had a cool and sunny start to the month. Students kept coming to the Centre, despite the intense pandemic situation. We started a new Beginners’ Yoga course, taught by Chandrashekar.
Dr. Padma continued with online Ayurvedic Counselling. We had students on the waiting
list, from Uruguay and Argentina. Online classes kept pace. Yoga teacher training for children continued to progress. Vani Devi from Rio de Janeiro a Friday Satsang. It was very beautiful. Teachers from Sao Paulo accompanied the Kirtans doing chorus. Chandrashekar performed Saturday Satsangs. He shared a very inspiring reflection about Faith. We had two programs. We inaugurated a special week of Yoga before the International Yoga Day. By zoom many teachers and schools participated in the classes, talks and presentations. Kanti Devi welcomed everybody and led the meditation before the program commenced. We offered the regular South American Satsang with Kanti Devi, speaking about Yoga, the essence of the practice and the goals according with the traditional teachings of our beloved Gurus.

Mid June was intense as we prepared for International Yoga Day. The weather was very cold. The cleaning of the main asana room, windows and reception intensified as the Centre was chosen to close the IYD program. Together with the Embassy of India and other yoga schools in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay we created a program not only for the 20th but also for the 7 previous days with classes and talks on Yoga, Sanskrit, philosophy, social work and Ayurveda. Twenty people came to the Centre, including yoga teachers, photographers and various karma yogis. The program ended with mantras and a message from Kanti Devi, addressed to all participants as the closing of the event. It was streamed on Zoom, Facebook Live, and Instagram. That evening Kanti Devi led our usual South American Satsang focus on the IYD. Many people participated and the words of the Masters vibrated throughout America bringing peace and harmony to all listeners. An inspiring week of hard work and joy. Students and teachers continued participating, very thankful for the opportunity to gather for meditation. We prayed intensely for peace and harmony in this world. May the Grace of Gurudev and Swamiji be upon us all. Om Shanti. Om.

Om Namah Sivaya. In June we had, for the first time in a long time, Kirtan chanting during Satsangs. The official COVID restrictions on chanting were suspended. It was very nice to once again sing together the Jaya Ganesha, Kirtans and the Sunday Prayers. We had a successful trial class – almost all participants booked into the next Yoga 1 Beginners Course. Also our special extra gentle yoga class developed nicely with many of familiar participants coming back after the lockdown. We started the first Yoga 1 Beginners Course after the reopening of the Centre. It was very nice to again have a direct teaching experience! Also our trial class attracted a few newcomers. Every day regular students of the Munich Centre returned after the lockdown, telling us how happy they are that they can practice again with us here on site. Centre de Yoga Sivananda Vedanta, Paris, France

Om Namah Sivaya. The Paris Centre is open. We continued to chant daily online the Om Namo Narayanaya for peace chant. We also chanted the mantra onsite with a group of students and karma yogis.

Life gave us long sunny days in early June. Little by little the students returned to the Paris Centre. There were some new Beginners’ Yoga courses and two new open classes. We anticipated there will be more activity in the evenings with more courses, a Satsang and a couple of extra open classes. There was an asana workshop with the topic, Balancing Postures. A group of karma yogis were trained to help in the reception. Some new teachers assisted the asana classes. We did the weekly Puja online from Bangalore and chanted the Mahisasura Mardinini and the Lalita Sahasranama. Swami Nityananda came back from Orleans. Swami Jyotirmayananda visited us. Swamiji gave an inspiring evening Satsang from Swami Sivananda’s book, Thought Power. One evening Satsang we had inspiring words from Master on the topic of karma yoga and many Kirtans a cappella. There was a cheerful mood with the presence of close students and karma yogis at the Centre. Precious help was there to put a dose of sattva in the house and to update the weekly tasks. We put prana into the planning of teachers and karma yogis schedules and to create a couple of new Beginners’ Yoga 1. We held a special program with Swami Kailasananda including an asana class by the Eiffel tower to celebrate International Yoga Day.

By mid June Life gave us an uplifting week with two visits of Swami Kailasananda and gurubais from Orleans. Swamiji gave an inspiring workshop with precious teachings on ‘how to live our life with joy’. That day, Parvati gave an asana workshop entitled opening the rib cage and experience longer pranayama. She gave many practical tips to go deeper in our practice. Narayana gave an asana class with visualizations. Swami Kailasananda listened and guided the staff, some teachers, close karma yogis and students. We had a cheerful public Satsang in the evening on the topic of heroism from the Universal Companion. There was the Celebration of International Yoga Day with a Satsang given by Swami Kailasananda. The class by the Eiffel tower was cancelled because of the demonstrations in Paris. Narayana gave the open class at four o’clock on the topic the art of visualization in the asanas. Swamiji gave an inspiring talk on the topic of yoga from Bliss Divine. There was a strong storm during the silence meditation. We chanted The Om Tryambakham 54 times for the health of the planet. There was a cheerful mood in the Centre with the presence of Swami Kailasananda. Swamiji listened to everyone and guided the staff. Swamiji, Narayana, Sarada Devi and Pushkar, the dog, left to Orleans after Satsang. In spite of the public strikes, the students came to the Paris Centre. That day, God gave us the music of the rain, the Sunday prayers, many mantras and inspiring words of Master from the Universal companion. There was a cheerful mood with the presence of close students and karma yogis. Precious help was there to put a dose of sattva in the house and to update the weekly tasks. There was more activity in the evening with more courses, the Satsang on Wednesday evenings and a couple of extra open classes. We did the weekly Puja online from Bangalore and chanted the Mahisasura Mardinini and the Lalita Sahasranama. May Swami Sivananda and Swami Vishnudevananda continue to guide and to inspire all of us. Then we had a zoom celebration with the Bahamas Ashram with many beautiful greetings. People from all over the world took part. Meanwhile we continued to work on our garden and the entrance at the Centre. We worked hard to promote the many new courses in the Centre, with some students still preferring to join online and some taking courses by listening to recordings. We planned a special program for the 50 year anniversary of the Tel Aviv Centre and the International Day of Yoga.

Mid June we did a we had a wonderful weekend retreat with Swami Shambhu Devananda, Pranava Chaitanya and Bhargavi Chaitanya with the help of karma yogis. 22 students participated in a beautiful program of yoga classes, Satsangs, yogic feasts and lectures. We had old time students as well as new students participating. We were very excited to see the Tel Aviv Centre full of people after the Corona lockdown. This is our first retreat since year and a half. Students greatly enjoyed the weekend and expressed interest in joining other activities in the Centre. Just before the retreat we painted some walls inside the Centre and decorated them with mandalas and beautiful Indian patterns in a variety of beautiful colours. We also made a beautiful new window at the reception area. We continued to work on the Centre’s entrance and we have a new lovely seating area. One of the cats has already chosen a permanent place to sit 🙂 Swami Shambhu Devananda completed a guided imagery course. We promote the Centre’s courses with great enthusiasm. Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Trivandrum, Kerala, India

Om Namah Sivaya. In early June student numbers increased slightly, the increase coming mainly from the Satsangs. Half of the Satsang participants were Centre newcomers. They were young people with a more holistic interest in Yoga. Due to a change in Covid regulations the Centre shifted back to the regular class schedule with 90 minute classes, which was much appreciated by students and teachers. Staff continued in the online activities as teaching and hosting classes, courses and Satsangs. We were grateful for the devoted Karma Yogis who supported the Centre. Our Staff received their 2nd vaccination.

Glossary

SIDDHIS: Psychic powers manifested as by products of spiritual advancement through personal Sadhana practice, such as meditation, mantra repetition and yoga.

Commentary:
Siddhis that are brought into the present life by birth indicate their attainment in a previous life, but it does not guarantee that the individual is making proper use of them in this life. Those gained through chemical means are not necessarily associated with any level of spirituality at all and can be easily governed by the ego. Siddhis achieved by Mantra repetition or tapas and austerities are generally of a very high order as long as they are performed for attaining God-Realization rather than personal or material gain. Powers that come from ‘Samadhi’ are the purest, for they come to the aspirant without being desired.

It must be remembered that siddhis are not the aim but a by-product of the path to God-Realization. Those who misuse Siddhi power for destroying others are themselves destroyed in the end.

The repetition of Gayatri Mantra, Pranava Mantra, OM Namah Sivaya, OM Namo Narayanaya, OM Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya Mantras, done with Bhava, faith and devotion will bestow a Mantra Siddhi.

When the mind wanders, repeat some mantras, stotras (spiritual verses), hymns, verses from the Gita or the Upanishads. – Sri Swami Sivananda
