Sivananda World News: The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Zentrum, Berlin, Germany

Om Namah Sivaya! Students were coming back to their routine after the “60 years of Sivananda Yoga in the West” special program: A cooking course on vegetarian winter inspired a good group of students. We also had several seminars and workshops. First we had a day seminar entitled “Body and Mind in harmony”. Students were happy to spend a full day in the centre and dive deeper into the practice. Then there was a very successful preparation day for TTC with a good group of participants, some of them already registered for one of the upcoming TTCs. Also a workshop on overcoming fear took place, where many students came to learn and to practice how to overcome this restricting emotion. At the end they all left joyful and inspired. The following weekend a workshop on Yoga@home was attended by an inspired group eager to get information on how to practice at home. The workshop was followed by a practical class where practice units with different duration could be experienced. People left happy and inspired. Also we had a Yoga 1 weekend intensive course with good attendance. One week later the second part of the weekend intensive course took place. It was also well attended. New curtains for the meditation room have been ordered to protect the Altar so we can use the room also for Asana classes if necessary. We received the new brochure from the printer and the bulk mailing of the brochure was completed. Students like it very much and start to register for upcoming courses and workshops. OM.

Om Namah Sivaya. Throughout the beginning of February the Chicago Centre renovation project picked up momentum as we moved towards having the space completed by Sivaratri. The finishing touches of paint, light fixtures, doors, hardware, etc were chosen. Staff were putting all of their energy to bringing this project to fruition. It’s an exciting time to be part of the Centre. The Yoga 1 and Yoga 2 courses all continued very well, with new courses scheduled to start mid month.  Student attendance increased, including a regular group joining us for the morning Satsangs. We had an Open House, with 12 happy participants, eager to learn more about Yoga and the Sivananda community here in Chicago.

By mid-February two new courses started: Positive Thinking & Meditation and a Yoga 2. All of the students from the previous Yoga 1 registered for Yoga 2, inspired to continue with the teachings. Several more joined the group that were looking to refresh their practice. The Open Class attendance continued to grow. The renovation work was full steam ahead with several different crews pushing ahead to get the downstairs ready for Sivaratri. The painting began and electrical outlets installed. Raghurama was successful in coordinating the subcontractors and is supervising every detail of the complex project. Radha picked the paint colors and shopped for the finishing touches, such as lighting fixtures, bathroom tile and vanity, and many of the finer details that go into making the space warm and welcoming. By the grace of Master and Swamiji, the job will be completed in time to celebrate Sivaratri at the end of February. By the grace of Master and Swamiji, staff are regular in their Sadhana and are doing well. Sending pranams to all! Om Shanti, Shanti, Shantihi.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, London, England

Om Namah Sivaya. During the beginning of February we continued with the certificate course on ‘The Power of Hatha Yoga’. There was much prana in the Centre with the residential students, and a good group of the general public attending every day. The group staying at the Centre fully embraced the spirit of Karma Yoga and gave their love and attention to the Centre by cleaning, organizing and assisting in the kitchen. During the evenings there were Satsangs including topics such as bhakti and wellbeing, silent walks and impromptu meditations when weather conditions prevented the walk from going ahead. The The Power of Hatha Yoga program came to a conclusion with the students showing much gratitude for the course. We also held a special weekend program entitled ‘Positive Thinking – Living Life with Joy’ which brought many newcomers to the Centre. The day culminated in a chanting Satsang and some words on the virtue of inspiration. We welcomed a new staff member to the Centre for one month stay. Preparation speeds up for the TTC which was fast approaching!

By mid-February our priest arrived to prepare the Centre for an auspicious start to the TTC. We had Pujas every morning, with the altar looking more radiant and bright as the TTC arrival day drew nearer. As the students arrived Spring was in the air and the sun was shining on the Peace Garden and streaming through into the reception. We had a Lakshmi Yantra Puja that evening, and afterwards sat together at dinner time and got to know one another. The Inauguration Ceremony and a Puja for Lord Ganesha was offered  to remove obstacles for a smooth running of the course. A new workstudy joined the staff for a month, meaning we have many hands now! Spring flowers were popping up through the soil, and the buds on the bushes were growing fat, waiting to open and show their glorious faces. Staff and residents were feeling much gratitude to be a part of the journey of the new TTCs. May the blessings of the Masters be with us all. OM.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Om Namo Narayanaya! During the beginning of February a nice group of Yoga One students started on Sundays, all inspired and excited to begin the course and start on their Yoga journey. All gathered for Guru Puja one Sunday evening to honor our teachers and the Light within. We had a Karma Yoga party to take down the tent-hut at staff’s apartment, preparing for LA County Inspection. It was nice to clean up and refresh energy after a rainy winter. We are training TTC graduates to teach at the Centre, working with them closely.

By mid-February Swami Sankarananda visited Los Angeles with Prema in the Yoga for Peace RV. Swamiji gave a weekend workshop on Steps towards Peace, drawing inspiration from the modern American saint Peace Pilgrim. To arrive at the ultimate inner peace, Prema taught 12 steps of spiritual preparation, purification and relinquishment. Prema lived her life as a pilgrim, serving as great demonstration and inspiration. Students are happy to find her teachings mirror Swamiji’s Five Points of Yoga, the teachings of Peace as eternal and universal. Swami Sankarananda shared more uplifting reflections and guidance to a larger group during a Sunday Satsang. A very happy Yoga One course continued. We saw students visiting from China, Italy and Germany. Omkari was away with family then to serve at Yoga Farm Ashram. Pranams.

Om Namah Sivaya! During the beginning of February Kanti Devi and Chandra came back after Brazil TTC, ATTC, TTC Refresher and other programs. Kanti Devi led a very inspiring Satsang. After Satsang Chandra showed the students their experience in Brazil through beautiful pictures. Three Beginners’ courses began with plentiful participation. Other courses ran well. After one of our Saturday trial classes, students signed on for March Beginners’ courses. We continued teaching in front of the sea on Sunday mornings. One Sunday we had only three dedicated brave students, despite the storm threat in Montevideo.

During mid-February we offered a special event – an asana class by Kanti Devi one Saturday morning. She taught to the Sivananda teachers who had the opportunity to refresh the teachings on classical asana class. Kanti Devi led both weekend Satsangs, giving inspired talks. The cleaning of the Centre was lovingly maintained by our teachers while the cleaning assistant is still sick. We had our first weekend sunny morning class, after the last two were cloudy, with many old students returning to the free class, including the homeless woman. The others activities continued. We started a Yoga 1 & 2 Intensive course on Tuesdays. Wednesday evening we began a Meditation course, with 6 students. Manjunath, along with the Subramanya Temple devotees conducted and sponsored the Thaipusam Puja, which celebrates the victory of Subramanya over the evil demon Soorapadman. He taught his popular North Indian cooking workshop to a group of 21 students. Despite a snow storm one Sunday there were 47 students for Satsang, most of whom came to see Swami Shankarananda. Teachers, karma yogi’s and students continue to be an inspiration. We are grateful everyday for the blessings of the Masters. May they remain in us. Pranams.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, New York, USA

Om Namah Sivaya! It was beautiful in New York City during the beginning of February. Swami Shambu Devananda came from Bahamas to visit the Centre. He gave a very well-attended workshop on the topic “Relieving Stress Through Yoga”. It was insightful and we all learned a lot through it. After the workshop Swami ji led the Satsang and spoke about obstacles in meditation. We had a full house that evening. There was a snow storm in New York so we had to close the Centre post 12noon. Swami Shambu, who was supposed to leave back to Bahamas that morning, missed his flight and returned to the Centre after waiting the whole day at the airport. Swami ji had his flight rescheduled so he and Nicolas went to visit the Ranch returned for the rescheduled flight. We offered our regular deaf yoga class, with Gita, and also an Ayurvedic Cooking workshop, with Isani. The workshop was a total success and the students enjoyed being here and learning Indian cooking.

By mid-February the weeks seemed to go by very fast. The sky was sunny and the air was chilly but still pleasant. Very dedicated karma yogis helped reorganize the boutique and label all the items and books for the inventory. Samyukta came back from California  only to leave us the next week and go onwards to the Yoga Camp in Montreal. Swami Satyapremananda visited the Centre and gave Satsang. She spoke about Bhakti Yoga and left us all very inspired, as usual. Nicolas worked on updating the internal system for the Centre. The basement work was almost wrapped up. Nick, one of our karma yogis, spent a couple of days helping Neeti with the same. We enjoyed beautiful, warm and sunny days in NYC. All the Staff are well and send their pranams. Om.

Centre de Yoga Sivananda Vedanta, Paris, France

Om Namah Sivaya. God gave us an uplifting month with a teachers’ weekend and some others visits of Swami Kailasananda. Ananta came from Orleans to give the teachers’ program together with Swamiji. Swami Kailasananda gave a wonderful workshop on the topic “The Aim of Hatha yoga” and two powerful Satsangs. Swamiji’s words and presence gave us inspiration and let us feel more in tune with the Masters and their teachings. Ananta gave a workshop explaining the importance of keeping the balance between the meditative mood and the dynamic aspect of the asana classes. He also gave a workshop-class on how to adjust variations and a big open class with teachers and students. The week after, Swamiji gave an awakening Satsang from a commentary of Swami Vishnudevananda on a description of Kali Yuga from the Srimad Bhagavatam. Swami gave also a program:  with an inspiring workshop on the topic of ‘practical pieces of advice to have a successful life’.  A beautiful asana class with 75 students who looked fresh and full of energy after having taken the class. And a wonderful Satsang from ” Thought power” on the topic of how to get ride from negative thoughts by applying pratipaksha bhavani. At the beginning of the month, Swami Kailasananda had a meeting with the owner of the building to talk about the renovations that they  will do this summer. We had also some meetings with the company who is doing the renovations to see some details before the starting of the works on the 6th. The renovations of the little asana room were carried out for one week and the renovations in the Meditation room followed the week after for two weeks. A professional plumber did some minor reparations in the kitchen and in all the bathrooms. The Meditation room looks luminous and spacious, it should be ready on the 24th for the Celebration of Sivaratri leaded by an Indian Priest. On the 10th the Swamis went to India. The close teachers: Gauri, Omkari, Jnanadev and Kaivalya supported the staff with the running of the Centre.  Swami Nityananda was back on the 21st. This month, there were workshops on the topics of:  ‘Yoga of Positive Relationships’, ‘Headstand’ and ‘Relaxation’. We had also a Gita intensive one week course with a very enthusiastic and focus group and a kirtan course and the usual positive thinking and meditation courses. The multidisciplinary researcher Philippe Bobola gave an interesting lecture on the topic “Science and Spirituality”, appreciated by all the participants. OM.

Om Namo Narayanaya, Blessed Selves. During the beginning of February Swami Dharmananda visited the Centre on his way back from India. Swami Jnaneswariananda spent a weekend with us, teaching the Bhagavad Gita group one Friday night, leading a teachers’ meeting on Saturday morning, presenting Peace Beyond the Emotions and a New Year’s resolutions follow-up on the Saturday afternoon. Swamiji taught a three-hour yoga class that Sunday morning, after which we ate a hearty brunch together. Anandamayi led a Yoga Nidra session one Sunday afternoon. Sankari Chaitanya and Mahashakti took a 3-day diabetes lay educator training, with the idea of integrating yogic lifestyle teachings into the evidence-based curriculum. A very engaged Meditation 2 course ended.

By mid-February a group of high school students from the Menlo School came for a half-day program, including introduction, asana class, vegetarian lunch, talk on Ayurveda by Ishwari, concluding with chanting. One student was inspired by a poster in the asana room of Swami Vishnu doing scorpion and proceeded to do it himself! Sankari Chaitanya attended Wisdom 2.0, a very popular conference “exploring the intersection of wisdom and technology.” She taught two asana classes there. We went to Berkeley to “flyer” for the Yoga Health Educator Training. New Yoga 1, Yoga 2 and Positive Thinking courses started. A Meditation 1 course ended and another began. The Gurus continued to pave the way. We are very inspired to carry Swamiji’s 60-year mission forward. May the blessings of Master and Swamiji be with us all always. Om.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, São Paulo, Brasil

Om Namah Sivaya from Sao Paulo. During the beginning of February we had a slight increase in the participation of students although the most remarkable was the activity on Open House Day, with a good participation of students and teachers. We also had a very participative Satsang with the direction of Krsna Das. The occasion was ideal to welcome four new teachers trained in Garopaba, who are very interested in starting to teach.

By mid-February we finished the Beginners’ course. Most students were intent on continuing their practice. We were having a large number of participant to Satsang which allows us to observe the well developed devotional aspect of the Brazilians. The new teachers continued to practice in their yoga classes and are very enthusiastic to help in the Centre. Teachers and students remain harmonious and very happy with the activities of the Centre. Om and Prem to all the Sivananda family.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Tel Aviv, Israel

Om Namah Sivaya. The beginning of February was an eventful and fruitful time in the Tel-Aviv Centre. Registration to the upcoming Passover Retreat in April took off and 25% of the rooms were filled up. Upcoming courses were intensely promoted with good registration. Sivaratri’s atmosphere was in the air and many devotees from all over Israel were calling to participate in the festive preparations. We offered a concert with Shir Sofer, a multi-instrumentalist, who mesmerized us all with his Tibetan bowls, traditional Indian musical instruments and overtones singing. Over 60 people attended, amongst them many children.

By mid-February we focused all our prana in promoting the many new courses that will start in the next while. Registration progressed well as we enthusiastically filled up the whole program. Our new website was updated with many new pages and a new opening clip in the homepage. Amazingly enough it affected our SEO dramatically and our position, with many keywords, improved dramatically. A new Meditation course started with twelve students. We were sadly advised of the passing of a long time teacher, Omkar Ronen. Omkar had been teaching the Tuesday evening open class for many years and was always seen with a smile on his face. The staff dedicated Om Trayambakam for the safe journey of Omkar’s soul and attended his funeral. Pranams to the Sivananda family.

Om Namah Sivaya. During the beginning of February Maunika, a very dedicated karma yogi and teacher at the Centre over the years, gave a Yoga Jaya workshop. This was held for the first time at Tokyo Centre, with 11 students, including TTC graduates and intense students at asana classes. The program was greatly enjoyed and appreciated by the participants. It promised to be scheduled on a regular basis. New batches for Yoga 1 course started on Fridays and Sundays with 14 people in total attending. Many of them were interested in TTCs and/or Ashrams as they worked on this course with enthusiasm. Machiko, director of Tokyo Centre, left for Vietnam to support the TTC for a month as an interpreter. Kalini, a Neyyar dam TTC graduate in 2015, joined as resident staff, helping the Centre for a month while the director is absent. Her positive vibrant energy was such a positive influence over the Centre.

During mid-February an asana workshop for stiff shoulders and backache relief was given by Meenakshi, a very dedicated asana teacher who graduated from the TTC in India in 2015. 10 people attended and enjoyed learning methods for stiff shoulder and backache relief through asana postures. Om Namah Sivaya. At the beginning of February Yoga 1 and Yoga 2 courses started. Mayavan taught Yoga Asanas according to an Ayurveda workshop. He offered Ayurvedic perspective on twelve basic asanas and how to practice them taking into considerations Ayurvedic body mind types. Students and teachers appreciated his knowledge very much. Our teacher, Narayani, enthusiastically continued cooking Tuesday dinners for students, as Vijay was taking a break. We started reading Tulsidas Sri Ramacharitamanasa at morning Satsangs which reminded the senior students and staff of Swami Vishnudevananada as we used to read with him during long, winter days.

During mid-February Ontario had a Family Long Weekend holiday which sent a lot of people out of Toronto. Regardless, we had good attendance at classes and Satsangs. Anantya taught our regular headstand workshop for students who needed some more instruction. Saraswati taught a two-hour relaxation workshop for injured workers, organized by downtown Community Legal Clinic. Their clients suffered range of physical and mental trauma and are all from low income communities. They enjoyed learning how they can manage stress. We offered them free courses at the Centre, which they were very excited to continue with. Some of them already visited the Centre the next day for the beginner trial class. Pranams to all.
