Sivananda World News: The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Zentrum, Berlin, Germany

Om Namah Sivaya. In June the Berlin Centre teachers and Karma Yogis took good care of the Centre as all staff travelled to the Retreat house, Reith, Austria to support the special programs for the Ascension weekend and Whitsun. It all worked out very well at the Centre. Students were happy that classes and Satsangs were taking place and teachers were happy to support. One Karma Yogi took care of the garden, where everything starts to bloom now. Swami Annapurnananda returned to the Centre.

Mid month saw a Yoga 1, Yoga 3, Yoga 5 and Yoga 121 started as well as a Yoga Anatomy course and the continuation of the long term online-course “Thought Power”. One weekend we had a Yoga 1 Intensive course with a nice group of students. another highlight was the Ayurveda program, with Dr. Kamlesh from India, who came to Europe for the first time after the pandemic. The program started with a lecture, which included a power point presentation about the 6 tastes, plus, and a joyful and inspiring cooking workshop where we all enjoyed the traditional Ayurvedic balanced Indian dishes. On the occasion of the International Day of Yoga Swami Gokulananda participated in an event organized by the Indian Embassy. It was quite hot mid June, so some classes were smaller than usual, but students were happy. We were inspired by an uplifting Satsang about Love.

Staff are all well. OM.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Om Namo Narayanaya. In early June the days were beautiful. Swami Pranavananda and Swami Sivasankariananda shared the teaching of a Beginner Retreat Weekend with a full schedule of talks and yoga practice. We participated in the Sivananda Organization’s Unite for a Peaceful Planet effort, stressing the efficacy of mantra chanting. Hasu Patel arrived and was enamoured with the new Centre. We enjoyed her Music Immersion Week. Two courses finished: Yoga 1 and Positive Thinking 1. A SIHY student continued for 3 more sessions. We taught a private class for a family of four, all at differing levels and very supportive of each other. Los Angeles experienced severe drought conditions during Spring 2022, hence there were mandates limiting watering. We laid wood chips in the garden to keep any moisture in. We enjoyed the garden’s bounty. We harvested a very large zucchini and many yellow squash. Swami Sitaramananda and Swami Adiparashaktiananda arrived as we prepared for the 50th Anniversary celebration in Los Angeles. Students of the Friday evening yoga class stayed for dinner and the Bhagavad Gita class, taught by Swami Sita. The Saturday event, held outdoors on the deck, began with a Satsang and Swami Sitaramananda’s talk on the Sivananda mission today, plus, a workshop on the topic Yoga of Relationships. Pundit Samavedula arrived to lead a Ganesha Puja; the power of the mantras. His voice pierced our hearts. The blessings spread far and wide. Karma Yogis prepared a welcome feast. Finally, we presented Swami Sita with a beautiful cake and commemorative gift. The students and guests received 50th anniversary t-shirts and Swami Sitaramananda’s last book. The group was a perfect cross-section of both longtime and new students. All staff then either flew or drove to the Yoga Farm for the inaugural 50th Anniversary Homa. The LA Centre will be closed for a few days. We felt so much gratitude for the richness of our lineage and teachings and the transformation of our lives.
During mid June the LA staff enjoyed the warm atmosphere at the Yoga Farm’s 50th Anniversary celebration, surrounded by special guests who have supported the Ashram for years. We witnessed the beautiful initiation ceremonies of Swami Hamsananda and Atmashakti Chaitanya. We offered our oblations into the home with Pundit Samavedula. Swami Sivasankariananda taught a workshop on Relaxation and Stress, led a morning Satsang on the topic of holistic healing and taught an asana class for the ATTC group. Swami Pranavananda and Ganapati headed back to LA to receive weekend guests. Swami Sivasankariananda drove back to LA in time to join the final two sessions of the 50th Anniversary celebration online. Retreat guests participated in a Pranayama Workshop and a talk on meditation. A Yoga 2 course ended. We were grateful for the new karma yogis who are coming forward!

It is an honor to serve. May the Gurus guide us as our reach grows wider and wider. Om.

Om Namah Sivaya. Life gave a cheerful mood with a big family in the house in June. We were blessed with the presence of Swami Kailasananda. Swamiji gave an inspiring public Satsang, appreciated by all from the Patanjali Raja Yoga Sutras and commented by Swami Durgananda. In spite of the long weekend there was a good attendance for the regular classes. Life gave precious help to put prana in the planning of the upcoming season. There was a Raja Yoga course with a little group of motivated students. The Masters sent armies of karma yogis to support the Centre and put sattva into the house. Vasishta enjoyed taking care of the boutique with the guidance of Rukmini. Ganga who was staff last year and Manusri who was recently in Orleans as a karma yogi, together with a big team of karma yogis were of great support to the Centre. Padmini travelled home. We already missed her beautiful personality, always ready to serve with joy and her gratefulness towards life. She mentioned she might return for karma yoga while she is in Paris. The Centre has a new teacher. Vishnupriya who has been doing karma yoga regularly gave a class to the staff in the morning during the Sadhana. She was confident and precise. She gave also an open class the same day in the afternoon. The project of organizing the cellar started. We sorted out some things to put in the bin and to give away. The students seem to be back. Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Shojiko Retreat, Japan

Om Namah Sivaya from the Shojiko Retreat. In early June we gave a weekend retreat program “Sanskrit for Beginners’ Yoga” by Vanidevi, for which 4 students stayed here at the Shojiko Retreat. Karma yogis also came here all the way from Tokyo to help us, enjoying a reunion with staff in person for first time in long time. One of the April online TTC graduates started to teach an asana class online. The COVID pandemic seemed to gradually move toward an end, however, online asana classes were to be continued, by which many students committed to Sadhana.

ATTC at the Yoga Farm went well, for which we remotely provide the Japanese translation service online. New Yoga 2 course started on Sundays, in which Yoga 1 graduates continued to learn about Yoga, more in depth. More and more students joined us for online Satsang this month, and those who started to tread the spiritual path with asana practice deepened their understanding on meditation and Kirtan.

May Master and Swamiji’s grace be with all. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shantihi. Om.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Vienna, Austria

Om Namah Sivaya. In early June we had the 2nd week where teachers and Karma Yogis were devotedly taking care of the Centre while the staff were supporting the Ascension Day and Whitsun Retreats in the Retreat House in Reith/Tyrol, Austria. Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Vilnuis, Lithuania

Om Namah Sivaya. In June 2022 Parvati led yoga teachers while taking care of the Vilnius Centre, as well as asana classes and Satsangs while Durga Devi participated in the Bhagavata Saptaha at the Retreat House in Reith. The sharing with the gurubhais gave new strength to continue the service in Vilnius Centre. Several students of the Centre attended the Saptaha online with a translation into Lithuanian, thanks to Swami Vairagyananda. Students enjoyed asanas on the platform in the garden and started registering for the upcoming yoga vacations and teachers weekends in July. Durga Devi participated in several meetings online to organize the IYD festival in Lithuania. It was decided that the celebration would take place at City Hall and the asana class would be led by the teachers from Sivananda Yoga School. Vilnius Centre will be active in service with some organization and teaching/demonstrating.

Later in June yoga teachers and karma yogis nicely took care of the Centre, so all usual activities continued successfully. Despite the summer time, students visited the Vilnius Centre regularly. We had an open yoga class for the upcoming IDY Yoga Day. People from the city registered for it very enthusiastically, but only half came. On that occasion, asana classes were free for the Centre students as well, given separately from the newcomers. After the class everyone was offered a fantastically delicious fresh vegetarian soup, cooked by Mama Parvati. Unfortunately, due to the rain, we were unable to conduct the class on the platform. Together with teacher Chaitanya, we spent five hours cleaning the facade area of the Centre. With the compressed water, we cleaned the paving tiles and all the corners, so everything shone with sattwa and prana, the pavement regained its red color. We had a friendly asanas class outside plus a lunch together. There was a good sense of spiritual family.

We are very grateful to the teachers, who support the Centre so well. OM.

PRANAYAMA – Pranayama During Meditation

If you do concentration and meditation, Pranayama, comes by itself. The breath becomes slower and slower. We will practice this Pranayama daily unconsciously. When you are reading a sensational storybook or when you are solving a mathematical problem, your mind is really very much absorbed in the subject-matter. If you closely watch your breath on these occasions, you will find that the breath has become very very slow. When you see a tragical story being enacted in the theater or a film-show, when you hear a very sad striking news or some glad tidings, when you shed tears either of joy or sorrow, or burst into laughter, the breath is slackened—Pranayama comes by itself. In those Yogic students who practice Sirshasana, pranayama comes by itself. It is obvious from these examples that when the mind is deeply concentrated on any subject, the respiration slows down or stops. Pranayama is being done automatically. Mind and Prana are intimately connected. If you turn your attention to watch the breath on those occasions, it will regain its normal state. Pranayama comes by itself to those who are deeply absorbed in doing Japa, Dhyana or Brahma-Vichara (enquiry of Atman).

Prana, mind and Virya (seminal energy) are under one Sambandha (connection). If you can control the mind, Prana and Virya are controlled by themselves. If you can control Prana, mind and Virya are controlled by themselves. If you control the Virya by remaining as an Akhanda Brahmachari without emission of even a single drop of semen for 12 years, mind and Prana are controlled by themselves. Just as there is connection between wind and fire (light), so also there is connection between Prana and mind. Wind fans the fire. Prana also fans the mind. If there is no wind, fire or light gets steady. Hatha Yogins approach Brahman by controlling Prana. Raja Yogins approach Brahman by controlling mind.
In this Pranayama you need not close the nostrils. Simply close the eyes if you practice it in a sitting posture. Forget the body and concentrate. If you practice this during walking, just feel minutely the movement of the air that is inhaled and exhaled.

Pranayama While Walking

Walk with head up, shoulders back and with chest expanded. Inhale slowly through both nostrils counting OM mentally 3 times, one count for each step. Then retain the breath till you count 12 OMs. Then exhale slowly through both nostrils till you count 6 OMs. Take the respiratory pause or rest after one Pranayama counting 12 OMs. If you find it difficult to count OM with each step, count OM without having any concern with the steps.
Kapalabhati can also be done during walking. Those who are very busy can practice the above Pranayama during their morning and evening walks. It is like killing two birds with one stone. You will find it very pleasant to practice Pranayama while walking in an open place, when delightful gentle breeze is blowing. You will be invigorated and innervated quickly to a considerable degree. Practice, feel and realize the marked, beneficial influence of this kind of Pranayama. Those who walk briskly, repeating OM mentally or verbally do practice natural Pranayama without any effort.

Pranayama in Savasana
Lie down on the back, quiet at ease, over a blanket. Keep the hands on the ground by the side and legs straight. The heels should be kept together, but the toes can remain a little apart. Relax all the muscles and the nerves. Those who are very weak, can practice Pranayama in this pose while lying on the ground or on a bedstead. Draw the breath slowly without making any noise, through both nostrils. Retain the breath as long as you can do it with comfort. Then exhale slowly through both nostrils. Repeat the process 12 times in the morning and 12 times in the evening. Chant OM mentally during the practice. If you like you can practice the ‘easy comfortable posture’ also. This is a combined exercise of Asana, Pranayama, meditation and rest. It gives rest not only to the body but also for the mind. It gives relief, comfort and ease. This is very suitable for aged people.

Rhythmical Breathing
The breathing in men and women is very irregular. In exhalation the Prana goes out 16 digits and in inhalation only 12 digits, thus losing 4 digits. But if you inhale for 16 digits as in exhalation then you will have rhythmical breathing. Then the power Kundalini will be roused. By the practice of rhythmical breathing you will enjoy real good rest. You can control the respiratory Centre that is situated in medulla oblongata and other nerves also, because the Centre of respiration has a sort of controlling effect on other nerves. He who has calm nerves, has a calm mind also.
If the units of exhalation and inhalation are the same, you will have rhythmical breathing. If you inhale till you count 6 OMs, exhale also till you count 6 OMs. This is breathing in and out in a measured manner. This will harmonize the whole system. This will harmonize the physical body, mind, Indriyas and will soothe the tired nerves. You will experience full repose and calmness. All the bubbling emotions will subside and the surging impulses will calm down.
There is another variety of modification of rhythmic breathing. Inhale slowly through both nostrils for 4 OMs; retain the breath for 8 OMs (internal Kumbhaka); exhale slowly through both nostrils for 4 OMs; and retain the breath outside (external Kumbhaka) for 8 OMs.
Repeat the above process a number of times according to your strength and capacity. You can gradually increase the duration of inhalation and exhalation after some practice of 8 OMs and the period between breaths to 16 OMs. But never try to increase the duration until you are sure that you have power and strength to do so. You must experience joy and pleasure in doing the same. You should not feel any undue strain. Pay considerable attention to keep up the rhythm. Remember that the rhythm is more important than the length of breath. You must feel the rhythm throughout your whole body. Practice will make you perfect. Patience and perseverance are needed.

The divine light and grace will descend only upon the Sattvic or the pure mind, because only a pure mind can receive it. – Sri Swami Sivananda
