Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Buenos Aires, Argentina, South America

Om Namah Sivaya. In early May we had good participation in courses and classes. We celebrated 15 years of the Buenos Aires Sivananda Centre, and we did so with special activities. Kanti Devi and Chandra came from Montevideo to share this celebration. It started with a Satsang, led by Kanti Devi, and then we played a video with images of the past 15 years. It was joyful to remember many nice moments. The special activities were as follow: Kanti Devi taught a two days workshop on Mandukya Upanishad; Swami Premananda took a practical yoga class including mantra repetition and a Bhagavad Gita workshop; Swami Dayananda, a theoretical-practical yoga class and a workshop on Raja Yoga sutras; Ananda and Narayani, a workshop on Ayurveda, and Shivapriya taught a workshop about Yoga and the back. The highlights were Satsangs, both led by Kanti Devi. The celebration also included a short play performed by teachers and students. The event ended with a concert of Indian classical vocal music and Indian classical dance, both of them performed by renowned local artists.

During mid-May all the current activities ran as usual. We said goodbye to Lilavati who was living in the Centre as temporary staff for one month. Also we welcomed Rama from Chile. He was staff in the Centre a few years ago and he came to spend some days doing karma yoga. Swami Premananda and Swami Dayananda met at the Embassy of India in order to plan the schedule for the International Yoga Day celebration. About twenty Yoga Centres were represented in the meeting. The Ambassador and the consul told us where the event will take place. It is a huge property used for exhibitions. Prem & Om to all.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Chicago, USA

Om Namah Sivaya. In early May, by Gurus’ grace, things continued well. A new Yoga 1 course started with full group of students registered, and a new Yoga 3 course started on Saturday mornings. Our long-time teacher Radha (Gloria McCartney) lead a workshop on Karma: the Law of Cause & Effect. Drop-in classes have been quieter. We had a couple of exceedingly gorgeous, summer-like days, followed by a sudden 40-degree drop in temperature and rainy, windy, raw weather. Many people have been falling ill with all the seasonal fluctuations. Once the sun shone again, the seedlings began growing in the window boxes. Work started in the garden.

During mid-May Ishwara came from the Ranch for a week to look after the Centre and did a good job taking care of things while Lalita Chaitanya was away at the Camp and Montreal Centre. Classes, courses, and Satsang continued normally. The Centre was closed for the Memorial Day holiday. The weather was feeling summery, and the city is blooming in earnest. Pranams to all. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shantihi.

The precautions that have to be taken during exercise and work has been also explained to avoid the pain before it happens. The students requested us to plan the shoulder and knee workshop separately, in-future. The spine & flexibility is one of our regular workshops and it helps the students to understand how the yoga asanas will help them to increase their flexibility and how they can do it mindfully to get the benefits. Vinod came to our Centre from Neyyar Dam. Swami Sivabhaktiananda and Viyasaji arrived from Canada on the way to Gangotri and Vishnu peak. Ivon also joined them the same day. Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Om Namah Sivaya. Greetings from Montreal. In early May the asana classes grew in size while courses continued to run well. A Wednesday evening Meditation 1 baigna, with a group of 10 people. They enjoyed the beginning of the course taught by Roy, a long term teacher at the Centre. The Centre held the spring ‘Montreal Weekend’ at the Ashram. Eight members attended along with 3 children joined Sushila. Many students attended the Ashram for the first time. Though the weekend was less structured than usual, the students were pleased to tune into the Ashram vibrations. They kept busy with the karma yoga and going to the Subramanya Temple. Yamuna spent time leading the children in yoga classes. Students were inspired and gained a greater understanding about the varied aspects of yoga, which they were previously unaware of. Two students came back to the Centre expressing an interest to begin karma yoga at the Centre. This was a good indication of how inspired they were after the weekend.
One Sunday we held a headstand workshop taught by Krishna. By the end of the class, all of the students were getting into the headstand. We offered a wonderful Satsang with Swami Shivabhaktananda, who talked about Mothers and Love, in celebration of Mother’s Day. Students were thankful for the learning that he offered. We are thankful for the extra support of karma yogis who gave to the Centre on the weekend in Sushila’s absence.

During mid-May we closed on Monday (an official holiday). The staff spent the day cleaning the Centre after the weekend renovations. The Centre needed a thorough cleaning due to the dust accumulated from the renovation work. The items were placed back in the boutique. Students were pleased with the result. Tuesday re-opened and the week ran smoothly. We invited staff from the Yoga Camp to join in the farewell to Sankara. All shared pizza and cake before Satsang. Swami Shivabhaktananda and Vyasa came before they headed for India. The evening was beautiful, with about 50 attending for Satsang in a bid to wish Sankara well in his next venture. Sankara has been staff in the Organization for approximately 2 years, he was at the Centre 9 months or so during his duration. The staff, teachers, karma yogis and students appreciated his presence and service, we wish him well for his journey. One Thursday morning Priest Manjunat conducted a full Puja. Teachers and karma yogis were invited, they were pleased to be involved. The vibrations were high. It gave a feeling of renewal for the Centre. Lalita Chaitanya came to the Centre to give a Sunday Satsang, the talk of bhakti and purpose of kirtan, it inspired many students and gave a deeper understanding to the practice of bhakti. We particularly spoke about the power of suggestion and checking motives to clarify decisions. The energy in the 2-hour Chanting Workshop was drawn toward the Divine Mother. We placed a sandwich board in front of the building, listing the day’s classes. We had noticeably more people stopping in for information.
