Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Chicago, USA

Om Namah Sivaya. At the beginning of April our all-new Atma Bodha course started with 9 students – off to an inspiring start. The other courses continued well. We welcomed Swami Shivabhaktananda for the weekend; he gave programs called “Yoga for Health and Happiness,” which were well received by students. We were all uplifted by his visit. There were several days of wintry weather, including an icy morning, which seemed to have an effect on drop-in class attendance and on Chicagoans’ morale. The City was doing a water-main replacement project along Broadway, the main street adjacent to the Centre. The project was projected to take a few months and has already turned getting around the neighborhood into very good training in patience.

During mid-April, by the grace of the Gurus, the courses, including Yoga Yoga 2, Yoga 3, Positive Thinking 2, and Atma Bodha, continued well. Drop-in classes were quieter. The road construction along Broadway continued to make neighborhood traffic and parking more challenging than usual. The masonry of the original building at 1246 W. Bryn Mawr Avenue was in need of repair, and we have an agreement with a contractor to replace the crumbling portions of the exterior parapet walls, which were letting moisture into the building, and fix affected edges of the roof. We hoped to raise donations to help afford the project, which should take place over the summer, and among the events we were planning for this purpose is a 108 Sun Salutation Challenge in May. Staff are well, feeling grateful for all the blessings of this life and send Pranams to all. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shantihi.

Staff enjoyed demonstrating some of the asanas, talking to and answering questions about yoga from the students. We are hoping to see some of those students show up to the Centre to take a class or experience their first ever class one of these days. Apart from the classes and courses we’ve been tackling some in house cleaning and organizing that needs to be done. The kitchen and laundry space looked super. This month we had five workshops : “Sun salutation”, “How to control anger”, “yoga @home”, “yoga at work” and “headstand”.  Three special courses started: Gita, Raja yoga Meditation and Positive thinking. The open house was calm may be because of the beautiful weather or the school holidays. The Masters sent armies of karma yogis to support the Centre and to put prana in various projects. Karma yogis repainted the pittams of the main altar, cleared some spaces in the office and in the changing rooms and continued the research for the yoga-day celebration. They also assisted at the desk, the kitchen and the boutique and planted some new flowers. OM.

KEVALA KUMBHAKA – Kevala: ‘only’. Kumbhaka: ‘breath retention’ or ‘cessation’

Kumbhaka is of two kinds – Sahita and Kevala. That which is coupled with inhalation and exhalation is termed Sahita. That which is devoid of these, is called Kevala (alone). When you get mastery in Sahita, then you can attempt this Kevala. When in due course of practice, the Kumbhaka subsists in many places without exhalation and inhalation and unconditioned by place, time and number—then that Kumbhaka is called absolute and pure (Kevala Kumbhaka), the fourth form of ‘Regulation of breath’. Such powers as that of roaming about in space unseen, follow this last form of Pranayama. In Vasishtha Samhita it is said: “When after giving up inhalation and exhalation, one holds his breath with ease, it is absolute Kumbhaka (Kevala).” In this Pranayama the breath is suddenly stopped without Puraka and Rechaka. The student can retain his breath as long as he likes through this Kumbhaka. He attains the state of Raja Yoga. Through Kevala Kumbhaka, the knowledge of Kundalini arises. Kundalini is aroused and the Sushumna is free from all sorts of obstacles. He attains perfection in Hatha Yoga. You can practice this Kumbhaka three times a day. He who knows Pranayama and Kevala is the real Yogi. What can he not accomplish in the three worlds, who has acquired success in this Kevala Kumbhaka? Glory, glory to such exalted souls. This Kumbhaka cures all diseases and promotes longevity.

God is watching all your thoughts and movements. – Sri Swami Sivananda
